What to do about a dog who down right refuses to eat commercial dog food?

Since our cat disappeared, our pup refuses to eat anything but people food. She barely goes to her food bowl and I am constantly throwing out food for her. Are there any tricks to get her to eat regular food? I have tried numerous canned and dry foods...and she will only eat a few bites of the canned if I stick some on her nose....but then she abandons that too.

Hmm...that's weird.

I asked my mom (who works at a pet store) and this is what she told me:

1. Stop giving her people food.
If you keep giving her people food, she'll never eat real dog food again, and that's not very healthy for her.

2. She may be going through a depression
Pets have feelings like humans. When they've had a friend to play with for a long time, but then they're gone, they get sad and go through weird phases. Idk if you wanna do this, but my mom suggested getting another cat...

I thought all this too....but she won't eat for 2 days if I don't give in...she lost a lot of weight from the surgery too....

And vets here encourage people food....ugh...I know she is not getting the vitamins she needs...Thanks! Thanks to your mom!!!!!!!!

Keara is so right, if you spoil your dog with people food....guess what he or she will like it as much as you.

Ya know, so many people here don't even bother with dog food...they think cooking for their dogs and giving scraps is healthier....my kids keep sneaking bits to her...grrrrrrrrrr

We do the same thing, and our would rather have our food. But we have to watch how much and how often we give them.

In my opinion, dogs are worse than cats...my cat would eat scraps and STILL eat his food...but I wonder if depression has something to do with it. We won't get another cat....(Hub hates them...so he says...yeah, that's why he always tweeked when KK would go in the hallway..."The cat will get out...quick!!" lol)

But our youngest wants a chiuaua....so for Christmas he said he'd get her one....Oh my!
